UAE honours Smit Machchhar and flydubai crew after September cockpit attack

The First Class Order of Zayed II recognises the crew’s response, while the airline’s account separates the safe landing from the continuing investigation.

The First Class Order of Zayed II has been conferred on the flydubai crew involved in the 30 September 2026 flight-deck incident, recognising their efforts to keep passengers safe. Indian captain Smit Machchhar was among those honoured after the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight diverted to Saudi Arabia.

The Dubai Protocol Department’s announcement is dated 27 October. It says UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the honour and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented it. The ceremony is therefore a recognition of the response to an earlier incident, not a new attack.

Fijian pilot Henson Steven, a former Fiji Airways pilot, has also been identified in reporting on the honours. He was one of the pilots travelling aboard the aircraft who helped bring it to safety. The airline’s own account credits the captain, the pilots who secured and landed the aircraft, cabin crew and passengers who assisted.

What honour did Smit Machchhar and the crew receive?

The crew received the First Class Order of Zayed II for their actions during the September incident.

The Dubai Protocol Department’s announcement explicitly connects the award with protecting passengers. Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, presented the honours and commended the crew’s responsibility.

The department says crew members thanked the president and expressed pride in the recognition. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of flydubai, was among the officials attending. The announcement records the honour and its purpose; it does not publish the findings of a completed criminal trial or an independent aviation investigation.

The award’s full name matters. The First Class Order of Zayed II should not casually be shortened into a claim that the recipients received every similarly named UAE decoration, or described as the country’s highest award without a verified classification supporting that description.

What does a civilian honour establish?

It records official recognition of the recipient’s service or conduct. An award ceremony is distinct from a criminal judgment or an aviation investigation. Recognition of a crew’s actions does not settle every allegation about the incident they faced.

What has flydubai said about the recognition?

The airline has welcomed the honour as recognition of its colleagues’ conduct and the support given to them.

In a statement dated 28 October, chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum praised the crew’s bravery, courage and professionalism in protecting passengers. He also acknowledged the care and support provided by the UAE leadership.

The statement places the recognition in the context of a workforce drawn from many nationalities. That is relevant to a story involving an Indian captain and a Fijian pilot, but it is not a reason to assign nationality to every person pictured at the ceremony without identification.

The honour was conferred on crew members collectively. The response should not be reduced to a single-person account which removes the pilots who landed the aircraft, the cabin crew or the passengers who intervened. Individual recognition and a collective emergency response can both be reported accurately.

What happened on flight FZ1073?

The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv service diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on 30 September after an incident in the flight deck.

The airline’s sequence of statements says pilots travelling aboard the aircraft secured it and landed safely. The airline confirmed that passengers and crew were safe and accounted for, and said replacement aircraft were deployed to Tabuk.

Machchhar was injured during the cockpit attack. His account of opening the cockpit door was subsequently discussed during an official video conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The safe outcome and the recognition of his actions are established separately from the investigation into the attacker’s intent.

The airline’s statements developed as information became available. An early statement said motives were unknown and subject to investigation. That early uncertainty should be dated, rather than presented as though no later investigative allegation has been made. Equally, later allegations must remain allegations unless established through the appropriate process.

An allegation about the attacker’s intent remains distinct from a court finding. Any suspect is presumed innocent unless convicted. Claims of a connection to a government or organisation require evidence of their own and are not established by photographs of an award ceremony.

What is known about Henson Steven’s role?

Steven has been identified as one of the pilots aboard the flight who helped secure a safe landing.

Reporting in Fiji describes him as a flydubai pilot who previously flew for Fiji Airways and was travelling as a reserve pilot. The airline’s account confirms that other pilots on board took control of the aircraft and diverted it to Tabuk, but its published incident statements do not name each pilot.

The published statements do not give a minute-by-minute account of the cockpit response or identify which pilot operated each control.

How has India recognised the captain’s actions?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Machchhar by video on 2 October and praised his efforts to protect passengers.

The Prime Minister’s Office account describes a conversation about the captain’s condition, his experience in the cockpit and the decision to make a final effort to open the door. Modi thanked Saudi Arabia and the UAE for the care provided.

This is a dated account from the early recovery period. It is not a current medical assessment and should not be used to announce that the captain has returned to work or received a particular clinical clearance. No such return-to-duty date is established by the honours announcement.

Why do reports of international recognition need precise wording?

Different forms of recognition have different statuses, and an introduced parliamentary resolution is not the same as one passed by a chamber.

The official text of US House Resolution 1612, dated 5 October 2026, identifies Josh Gottheimer as its sponsor alongside Michael McCaul and Don Bacon. The document says it was submitted and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

That document supports saying a resolution was introduced. It does not, on its own, support saying the House adopted it. The distinction avoids turning a tribute proposed by lawmakers into a completed legislative action without checking the action record.

The UAE honour is a separate, completed act confirmed by the Dubai Protocol Department and flydubai. Reports about other proposed or promised awards should likewise be checked against their own official records, rather than combined into a list implying that every presentation has already occurred.

What does the distinction mean for passengers?

Passengers need current operational information for their own booking, rather than an inference from the honours ceremony.

The airline’s incident updates included a temporary suspension of Israel services and support for affected passengers. Those statements describe the response at the time. A traveller should check current flight status and booking communications before relying on an older suspension notice.

The ceremony itself announces no new passenger rule, visa requirement or travel restriction. It should not be used as a reason to assume that an unrelated flight has been cancelled or that a particular route has resumed.

The India–Australia relations guide examines other official exchanges between countries, while the travel trends report addresses planning considerations. For this incident, operational decisions still need to be checked with flydubai.

What happens next?

The honours recognise the crew’s response while investigative and operational updates require their own official announcements.

Flydubai has said it supports the authorities’ investigation and the people affected. Any criminal charge, court outcome, final safety finding or return-to-duty announcement should be reported when an identifiable authority provides it. The 27 October ceremony establishes the recognition; it does not supply those later outcomes.
