Air India Express is set to create aviation history by becoming the first airline to operate an international passenger service from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The airline is expected to launch direct flights to Abu Dhabi from July 15, marking a significant milestone for India’s newest major airport and providing enhanced connectivity between Maharashtra and the United Arab Emirates.

Bookings for the much-anticipated service are expected to open shortly, according to reports. The launch will signal the beginning of international operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport, which commenced domestic commercial services in late 2025.

The introduction of the Air India Express Navi Mumbai Abu Dhabi flight is expected to benefit thousands of passengers, particularly Indian expatriates, business travellers, and tourists who regularly travel between India and the Gulf region.

A Major Milestone for Navi Mumbai International Airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport was developed to ease pressure on Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, one of India’s busiest aviation hubs. Since beginning domestic operations, the airport has steadily expanded its network and passenger capacity.

The launch of an international route represents the next phase of the airport’s growth strategy. Industry experts view the Abu Dhabi service as a natural first choice given the strong demand for travel between western India and the UAE.

The airport’s strategic location is expected to attract travellers from Navi Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune, and surrounding regions who currently rely on Mumbai airport for international departures.

Officials believe international connectivity will play a crucial role in transforming Navi Mumbai into a major aviation gateway for western India over the coming years.

Why Abu Dhabi Matters for Indian Travellers

Abu Dhabi remains one of the most important international destinations for Indian citizens and non-resident Indians (NRIs). The UAE is home to one of the world’s largest Indian expatriate communities, with millions of Indians living and working across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and other emirates.

Direct air connectivity continues to be a key factor supporting economic, cultural, and family ties between the two countries.

The new route is expected to serve a wide range of passengers, including:

  • Indian professionals working in the UAE
  • Families visiting relatives and friends
  • Students travelling between India and the Gulf
  • Business executives and entrepreneurs
  • Tourists exploring Abu Dhabi and neighbouring emirates

For many travellers residing in the Navi Mumbai region, the new service could significantly reduce travel time to the airport and provide a more convenient alternative to departures from Mumbai.

Air India Express Expands Its Gulf Network

The launch of the Air India Express Navi Mumbai Abu Dhabi flight aligns with the airline’s broader expansion strategy across international markets.

Over the past few years, Air India Express has strengthened its presence in the Gulf region, which remains one of its most important markets. The carrier currently operates services connecting multiple Indian cities with destinations across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Following the integration efforts within the Air India Group, Air India Express has been focusing on expanding connectivity while modernising its fleet and improving passenger experience.

Industry analysts believe the airline is well-positioned to capture growing demand from both leisure and diaspora travellers, particularly on short- and medium-haul international routes.

Boost for India-UAE Connectivity

The India-UAE aviation corridor remains among the busiest international travel markets in the world.

Strong economic cooperation, increasing trade volumes, tourism growth, and a large expatriate population continue to drive demand for air travel between the two countries. Airlines on both sides have consistently expanded capacity to meet growing passenger requirements.

The launch of direct services from Navi Mumbai is expected to further strengthen these ties while creating additional travel options for passengers.

Experts also believe the route could contribute to increased business activity between Maharashtra and the UAE, particularly in sectors such as real estate, technology, logistics, finance, and trade.

What Passengers Can Expect

While detailed flight schedules are expected to be announced when bookings officially open, travellers can already anticipate several advantages from the new service.

These include:

Greater Convenience

Passengers living in Navi Mumbai and nearby areas will have easier access to international flights without needing to travel across Mumbai.

Reduced Congestion

The shift of some international traffic to Navi Mumbai Airport could help reduce congestion at Mumbai’s primary airport.

More Travel Choices

Additional routes create greater flexibility for travellers and may improve connectivity options across the Gulf region.

Future International Expansion

The Abu Dhabi route is widely expected to be the first of several international destinations that will eventually operate from Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Looking Ahead

The commencement of international services from Navi Mumbai International Airport marks an important chapter in India’s aviation growth story. As passenger demand continues to rise and airlines expand their networks, the airport is expected to emerge as a significant international gateway for western India.

With direct flights to Abu Dhabi scheduled to begin on July 15, Air India Express will play a pioneering role in opening Navi Mumbai to global air travel. For NRIs, business travellers, and tourists alike, the new connection represents improved accessibility and stronger links between India and one of its most important overseas destinations.

As international operations commence, industry observers will be watching closely to see which destinations are added next to Navi Mumbai’s growing route network
