The Australian government has advised the people stranded overseas to get themselves vaccinated with whatever vaccine is available.

Minister of Immigration Alex Hawke says that it is better to get protected with whatever vaccine is available in the country one is based.

In a media briefing, the minister said, “If you are in a country like India where there is a significant outbreak and significant community transmission, it is very important (that) the vulnerable people are being protected.”

“So, the advice is to get protected with the vaccines which are being used in the country where you are based.”

Minister Hawke said that when people come back to Australia, “hopefully we will have more information about what it means to be vaccinated by the individual vaccine.” (sic)

“We have had some people who had come back to Australia who have had single vaccine overseas and then wondered about the second vaccine. Obviously, if the first vaccine has been AstraZeneca or Pfizer, that’s easy because we have got guidance as to what to do then,” said Mr Hawke.

“If the first vaccine has been another vaccine, we need to discuss with the trusted medical advisors about what to do next. It may be appropriate for those people to have a full course of vaccination of one of the approved vaccines.”

Minister Hawke said that Australia would decide upon the threshold of vaccination in the country in the coming weeks, to make a decision on the opening of the borders.
