A Victoria court has jailed Melbourne-based Kumuthini Kannan and her husband Kandasamy Kannan for keeping an Indian woman as their domestic slave for eight years.

9 News reported that the judge condemned their conduct as “disgraceful”.

Kumuthini Kannan and husband Kandasamy Kannan had kept a Tamil woman in their Mount Waverley home as their domestic servant between July 2007 and July 2015.

Supreme Court Justice John Champion jailed her for Kumuthini Kannan for eight years. She will have to serve four years before she is eligible for parole. She has already served about six weeks.

57-year-old Kandasamy Kannan was jailed for six years. However, he will be eligible for parole after three years.

The couple was found guilty of intentionally possessing a slave and intentionally exercising power over a slave in April following a 10-week trial.

Justice Champion said their cases were the first example of domestic slavery in Australian legal history.
