Global leaders have paid heartfelt tributes to Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister, who passed away yesterday at the age of 91. Known for his transformative economic policies and dignified leadership, Singh’s death marks the end of an era in Indian politics.

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed Singh as “a visionary leader and a steadfast friend of France.” In a statement, Macron praised Singh’s role in fostering India-France relations, particularly in defence and nuclear energy collaboration.

India has lost a great man, and France a true friend, in the person of Dr. Manmohan Singh. He had devoted his life to his country. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of India.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called Singh a “pillar of wisdom” and lauded his contributions to global economic stability, while Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake described Singh as “a statesman who exemplified humility and intellect.”

The weight of grief bears down on me at the news of the passing of my honoured and cherished friend: Dr Manmohan Singh.

Obituaries, essays and books a plenty there will surely be about this great man, celebrating him as the architect of India’s economic reforms. As Prime… pic.twitter.com/44bA3s7vst

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted that Singh’s legacy of “strengthening Indo-US ties and promoting global peace” would endure. Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper highlighted Singh’s influence on Indo-Canadian relations, recalling his advocacy for trade and multiculturalism.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai described Singh as “a true friend of Afghanistan,” acknowledging his support for Afghanistan’s reconstruction efforts. Brazilian President Lula da Silva called Singh “a global leader with a profound sense of humanity,” while former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa remembered him as a “mentor and ally in fostering South Asian unity.”

#India has lost one of its most illustrious sons. #Dr_Manmohan_Singh was an unwavering ally and friend to the people of #Afghanistan. I profoundly mourn his passing and extend my deepest condolences to his family, the government, and the people of India.

As a mark of respect, the Indian cricket team, currently touring Australia, wore black armbands during their match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Captain Rohit Sharma stated, “Dr. Singh’s contributions to our nation will always inspire us.”

A Legacy of Vision and Restraint

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Manmohan Singh was India’s 13th Prime Minister, serving from 2004 to 2014. A distinguished economist, Singh is widely credited with liberalizing India’s economy during his tenure as Finance Minister in the early 1990s.

Singh’s premiership saw landmark developments, including the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement, rural employment schemes, and efforts to stabilize India during the global financial crisis. Known for his integrity and soft-spoken demeanor, Singh was admired across party lines for his ability to lead with calm authority.

Dr. Singh’s passing has left a void in global politics. As tributes pour in, his legacy remains a testament to leadership grounded in wisdom and compassion.
