US tops number of wife-deserting NRIs: RTI

According to information shared by the Government of India under the Right To Information (RTI) Act, most of the brides were deserted by the US-based NRIs.

India Today has reported that non-resident Indians (NRIs) from the United States of America top the chart in the desertion of wives in India and ghosting cases, an RTI reply revealed.

“In the last seven years, the government of India received as many as 2,156 complaints of Indian brides being deserted or ghosted by their NRI husbands,” reads the report.

According to the reply received by Kerala-based activist and RTI campaigner K. Govindan Nampoothiry, the highest number of cases (615) were reported from the US.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the second-highest cases (586), followed by Singapore (237), Saudi Arabia (119) and Kuwait (111).

Indian authorities received 104 cases from the United Kingdom, 102 cases from Australia and 92 complaints were from Canada.

“The Ministry of External Affairs provided the list of marital disputes reported in 47 countries in response to the RTI. Most of the cases of desertion of Indian wives and ghosting in which 2156 Indian women facing NRI marital disputes,” Govindan was quoted as saying by India Today.

India’s National Commission for Women says it has received 2,846 complaints from women who had been abandoned between 2017 and 2021.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee also noted that 5,298 complaints related to Non-Resident Indian (NRI) marital grievances were received between January 2016 and October 2019. And between 2015 and 2019, the Indian government said it dealt with more than 6,000 cases.
