WASHINGTON– Indiaspora, a nonprofit organization comprising global leaders of the Indian diaspora in America, has unveiled the inaugural volume of the “Indiaspora Impact Report” series, conducted in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group. Titled “Small Community, Big Contributions,” the report delves into the profound impact of the Indian diaspora in the United States, focusing on areas such as public service, business, culture, and innovation. Alongside revealing statistics, the project will feature compelling profiles of individuals who exemplify the diaspora’s significant contributions across diverse economic and cultural domains.

As the second largest immigrant community in the United States, characterized by its youthful demographics and high educational attainment, a recent report has assessed the profound influence of Indian immigrants and Americans of Indian heritage on American society. The comprehensive analysis conducted by the Indiaspora examines their contributions across economic, cultural, scientific, civic, social, and philanthropic spheres.

Despite comprising only 1.5% of the U.S. population, Indian Americans have emerged as one of the most influential immigrant groups in the country today, breaking barriers and making significant strides across various sectors. This community, now numbering 5 million as of 2023—a 50% increase since 2010—is evenly split between first-generation immigrants and individuals claiming Indian ancestry.

Indiaspora Founder M.R. Rangaswami remarked, “Indian Americans are making a disproportionate and positive impact on diverse aspects of American society. Their innovative contributions not only contribute to the nation’s economic growth but also pave the way for future advancements.”

In the realm of the U.S. economy, Indian-origin CEOs currently lead 16 Fortune 500 companies, collectively generating approximately 5% of the total revenue, which amounts to around $978 billion. Since 2008, Indian companies have invested over $40 billion in the U.S., fostering job creation and supporting research and development initiatives. Indian Americans contribute significantly to the nation’s tax base, accounting for 6% of all U.S. taxes paid.

The Indian diaspora in America also demonstrates a strong commitment to philanthropy, exemplified by donations exceeding $3 billion to U.S. universities. Notably, these contributions include 67 donations surpassing $1 million each to over 40 universities, reflecting a deep-rooted ethos of giving back to society.

In the realm of science and innovation, members of the Indian diaspora play a pivotal role, securing more than 10% of NIH grants and holding numerous U.S. patents. They also occupy influential positions in academia, driving advancements in research and education.

Education is another area where the Indian diaspora in America excels, with 77% holding a college degree, significantly higher than the national average of 36%. The community includes 23,000 full-time Indian professors at colleges and universities across the country, serving as mentors and role models to countless students pursuing their educational aspirations.

Sesh Iyer, North America Regional Chair at BCG X, commented, “While achievements like spelling bee championships and CEO positions garner attention, the impact of Indians calling America ‘home’ extends deeply into U.S. culture. From cultural festivities like Holi and Diwali to the growing popularity of Indian cuisine, yoga, and cricket, India continues to enrich America’s rich cultural tapestry, adding new dimensions to over 250 years of cultural exchange.”

Looking ahead, the report emphasizes the potential for further collaboration between India and the United States, driven by the dynamic Indian diaspora. As bridges between two vibrant democracies, Indian-Americans are poised to facilitate deeper economic partnerships, cultural exchanges, and strategic alliances that benefit both nations.

The Indiaspora report serves as a compelling testament to the transformative influence of the Indian diaspora in shaping American society and fostering mutual understanding between India and the United States. As the community continues to thrive and evolve, its contributions are set to play an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the global landscape of the 21st century.
