Parag Agrawal, who took over as Twitter’s Chief Executive, told employees on Monday that the future of the social media firm is uncertain.

Parag Agrawal has told his employees that the company’s future is uncertain once the deal with Billionaire Elon Musk closes.

Elon Musk has bought Twitter for $44 bn. The company has told its employees Mr Musk will
will join the staff for a question-and-answer session at a later date.

Agrawal joined the staff at a town hall event where people asked him about Musk’s plans for the company, the possibility of layoffs and the board’s rationale for the deal.

Twitter has a purpose and relevance that impacts the entire world. Deeply proud of our teams and inspired by the work that has never been more important. https://t.co/5iNTtJoEHf

Responding to whether former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was permanently suspended from Twitter last year, would be allowed to return once Musk takes over, Agrawal said, “Once the deal closes, we don’t know which direction the platform will go. I believe when we have an opportunity to speak with Elon, it’s a question we should address with him.”

Agrawal also told employees there were no plans for layoffs.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement released by Twitter.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots and authenticating all humans,” he added.
