In the democratic landscape of India, the participation of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the electoral process holds paramount significance. As global citizens with deep-rooted ties to their homeland, NRIs often seek avenues to exercise their voting rights and contribute to the democratic fabric of India. Understanding the mechanisms available for NRIs to cast their votes in Indian elections becomes imperative in ensuring their active engagement and representation in the democratic process.

Eligibility Criteria for NRI Voters

Any Indian citizen residing in a foreign country, who has not acquired foreign citizenship and has reached the age of 18 by January 1st of the respective year, is eligible to apply for registration in the voter roll of their constituency. The application process involves filling out Form 6A and submitting it to the relevant Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).

Obtaining Form 6A

Form 6A, the application for inclusion of a name in the electoral roll by an overseas elector, is the primary document required for NRI voter registration. NRIs can obtain Form 6A by downloading it from the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of the respective state or from the official website of the Election Commission of India. Additionally, Form 6A is available free of charge at Indian Missions located in foreign countries.

Application Process

NRIs can submit Form 6A either in person or by post to the Electoral Registration Officer / Assistant Electoral Registration Officer of the constituency within which the place of their ordinary residence in India, as given in their passport, falls. Alternatively, they can file the form online on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of the concerned state or the website of the Election Commission of India. When filing Form 6A online, it’s essential to upload a copy of the passport along with copies of other necessary documents such as visa.

Casting the Voting Rights

Upon successful enrollment, an NRI elector has the option to personally vote in an election within the constituency where they are registered. To cast their vote, the elector must carry their original passport as identification.
