A photograph of an Indian singer performing in the US with dollars strewn all around her has gone viral on social media.

As the month-long Russian invasion of Ukraine drags on, millions of civilians are caught in the middle of an escalating war and humanitarian crisis. Several groups and charities have been organising events to raise for beleaguered Ukrainian refugees that have been pouring into neighbouring countries. One such event, held at Atlanta, Georgia by some non-resident Indians (NRIs), raised around $300,000 for Ukrainians.

However, it was not the amount mobilised that raised eyebrows, but the photos that emerged from the event which showed the singer surrounded by piles of US dollar bills around her.

Popular folk singer Geeta Ben Rabari gave a scintillating performance on stage along with her troupe which the attending audience seemed to enjoy a lot. Videos of the performance have been shared on social media which shows the NRIs showering American dollars on stage.

The photographs and videos were shared on Instagram and Facebook by Ms Rabri herself, where she praised the audience and said that she ‘had a great Lok Dayro show at Atlanta, Georgia, USA…such an interactive audience.’

Twenty-six-year-old Geeta has entertained US audiences earlier too and has also performed at the “Namaste Trump” event held in Ahmedabad in presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then US President Donald Trump in February 2020.

She has also featured in promotional videos of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL).

Geeta hails from Tappar in Kutch, Gujarat. Her talent was noticed early in life when people from nearby areas would invite her to sing for them at social functions. She is adept at singing folk songs, Bhajans, Garba and film songs too and is affectionately called Kutchi Koyal. She has a YouTube channel of her own where she uploads her latest hits. She was in the news last year after she posted a photograph on social media showing her allegedly receiving her Covid-19 jab at home. The Kutch district panchayat health department had issued a show-cause notice to her for flouting rules.
