A group of men and women slept in the open outside the Indian mission in London on Saturday night in a show of solidarity with the protesting farmers on the outskirts of Delhi.

This was the third such sleep-out by the group that has vowed to continue doing such demonstrations on a monthly basis for as long as the farmers’ agitation in India continues. Kisan Sleep Out seeks to simulate the conditions of the farmers who have been camping outside Delhi for several months.

An activist speaking on behalf of the protestors in London said that the idea behind the sleep-outs was to keep the protests alive in London.

According to reports, around 40 people that included not just of Sikhs but also people from other faiths and nationalities, participated in the demonstration that preceded the sleep-out.

Earlier, similar protest was organised in May when many people slept outside the High Commission in London.

“The world is watching the Indian farmers’ movement. In defending their homes and livelihoods against the faceless corporate takeover, they have inspired us all. Their struggle is the struggle for workers’ rights the world over. So, on behalf of progressives in Britain, I send my solidarity to tonight’s protest action,” a statement from a former Labour leader that was read out at the protest said.

Simultaneous protests with sleep-outs were held in California, New York and Canada. Punjabi actress Monika Gill participated in the sleep-out in Canada, it was claimed.
