The United States has recently introduced stricter regulations for visa renewals, making the process lengthier for H-1B visa holders and tourists. The tightening of the interview waiver rule means that more applicants will now be required to undergo in-person interviews, extending wait times for visa processing.

Stricter Interview Waiver Rules

Previously, certain visa holders, including those on H-1B work visas and B-1/B-2 tourist visas, could renew their visas without attending an in-person interview. The new policy reduces the eligibility for these waivers, requiring more applicants to schedule face-to-face interviews at U.S. embassies or consulates.

Increased Waiting Periods

The tightening of the waiver rule is expected to significantly increase visa processing times. Many U.S. consulates already have backlogs, and with a higher number of applicants needing interviews, wait times for H-1B holders, business travelers, and tourists could stretch even further.

Impact on H-1B Workers & Tourists

For H-1B visa holders, who often travel between the U.S. and their home countries for work or personal reasons, the additional interview requirement could mean delays in re-entering the U.S. Similarly, tourists applying for B-1/B-2 visas may face extended wait periods before they can secure an interview slot.

The U.S. government’s decision to tighten interview waiver eligibility adds another hurdle for visa applicants, especially skilled professionals and tourists. Those planning to renew their visas should anticipate delays and prepare their applications well in advance to navigate the longer processing times.
