Many travellers who were previously obligated to attend an in-person interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate will find this interview waiver process to be a welcome relief. To qualify for the interview waiver process, applicants must renew their visa in the same category within 48 months of its expiration. Moreover, consular officers are now authorised to exempt the requirement of an in-person interview for those seeking F, H-1, H-3, H-4, non-blanket L, M, O, P, Q, and academic J visas, who have previously been issued any type of visa, provided that they are applying for a visa in their country of nationality or residence.
However, the exemption does not apply to applicants who have a previous refusal that was not subsequently waived or overcome. In addition, adjudicating consular officers may request an in-person interview if they require additional information from applicants.
