Study abroad plans for 2026 face three different clocks: Australia’s student family rules changed on 2 October, Canada’s living-funds threshold rose on 1 September, and shorter UK Graduate visas begin for applications from 1 January 2027.
For an Indian student choosing between Australia, the UK and Canada, those dates can affect the same decision differently. A course beginning in 2026 may finish after the UK change. An Australian offer does not establish that a partner can accompany the applicant. A Canadian admission letter does not establish that every programme leads to a graduate work permit.
There is no verified universal winner for fees, jobs or permanent residence. The useful comparison is between actual courses, the household’s available funds and the immigration rules applying to the intended application date.
This guide compares those decision points using official guidance checked on 8 October 2026. Amounts remain in their original currencies because an unsourced exchange rate would make a precise-looking rupee comparison unreliable.

What should a study abroad comparison start with?
Start with three actual course offers or shortlisted programmes, then compare their conditions against the same personal requirements. Comparing countries before identifying the course can hide differences in qualification level, duration and eligibility.
Write down the intended occupation, total money available, whether family must accompany you and whether post-study work is necessary to justify the expense. These are constraints, rather than benefits a university brochure can promise.
What is the difference between admission and graduate work eligibility?
Admission allows a student to enrol under the provider’s conditions. A graduate work route has separate immigration requirements involving the course, institution and applicant. An offer letter does not establish that those later requirements will be met.
Ask the provider for the exact course title, award, campus, duration and intake date. A course with a similar marketing name can lead to a different qualification, which can matter later when a visa route distinguishes degrees from other awards.
Keep each answer in writing and date it. The objective is a comparison you can revisit before paying a deposit, rather than a country ranking that becomes stale as rules and course offerings change.
How do the basic student routes compare?
Each destination has a separate student immigration route and requires evidence beyond a university offer. Australia uses the subclass 500 Student visa, the UK uses the Student route, and Canada uses a study permit.
| Decision | Australia | United Kingdom | Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main study permission | Student visa, subclass 500 | Student visa | Study permit |
| Core provider evidence | Confirmation of Enrolment | Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies | Letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution |
| Work during ordinary teaching periods | Generally 48 hours per fortnight | Common degree-level entitlement: 20 hours per week, subject to course and sponsor conditions | Eligible off-campus students: 24 hours per week |
| Family issue to check | New restrictions and exemptions from 2 October 2026 | Research-level or qualifying government-sponsored eligibility | Family admission and spouse work permission are separate checks |
| Main graduate route | Temporary Graduate visa | Graduate visa | Post-graduation work permit |
Use Study Australia’s visa guide, the UK Student visa guidance and IRCC’s study permit requirements for the actual application.
An agent’s checklist can help organise paperwork, but should not replace the official route for your nationality and circumstances. In Canada, check whether an attestation requirement or exemption applies. In all three, check any evidence requested for the individual application.

How much money must you prove, and is that the real budget?
Visa financial evidence is a minimum eligibility calculation, not a complete estimate of what the course and household will cost. Tuition, transport and other requirements must be added where the rules specify them.
Canada requires C$23,448 for one applicant’s first-year living expenses outside Quebec for applications from 1 September 2026. The IRCC financial-support page says this excludes tuition and transport and requires funds without depending on work in Canada.
The UK’s current financial guidance requires £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, alongside the relevant course fees. It also specifies the holding period and timing for the evidence.
| Living-funds evidence checked on 8 October 2026 | Amount | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Canada, one applicant outside Quebec, applications from 1 September 2026 | C$23,448 for the first year | Excludes tuition and transport; family size changes the amount |
| UK, London | £1,529 monthly for up to nine months | Course fees and relevant family costs are separate |
| UK, outside London | £1,171 monthly for up to nine months | The application-date rules and evidence conditions matter |
| Australia | Check Home Affairs’ current subclass 500 financial-capacity instructions | The required evidence depends on circumstances; do not substitute a living-cost estimate |
Australia’s official student visa page is the source for financial-capacity evidence. Do not treat a number in an older guide as a complete household budget, particularly after the family eligibility changes.
Build a separate course budget using the provider’s actual fee schedule and current accommodation quotes. Include insurance or health charges, travel, deposits, equipment and the period before any first salary. Subtract a scholarship only after its amount and conditions are confirmed.
Can part-time work pay for the course?
Work permission does not guarantee a job or enough earnings to fund tuition, so the plan should remain viable without an assumed immediate income. Canada’s financial guidance explicitly requires funds without working there.
Australia generally permits 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, with separate arrangements for research master’s and doctoral students. The official work guidance explains the limits and circumstances.
The UK’s Appendix Student links work permission to the course and sponsor. The common 20-hour term-time entitlement should not be advertised as a right for every student on every course.
Canada’s off-campus work guidance allows eligible students up to 24 hours weekly during regular academic sessions. Scheduled breaks have separate provisions, and hours across multiple jobs must be considered together.
Fortnightly and weekly limits are different accounting periods. Do not assume that working fewer hours one week allows you to exceed a weekly limit the next. Ask the institution how its term or session dates affect your permission, and check the conditions on the actual visa or permit.
For an Australian job, the Fair Work Ombudsman’s migrant-worker guidance explains employment rights. A student’s need for income does not justify accepting unlawful pay or an employer’s incorrect account of visa powers.
Can a partner or children accompany an Indian student?
Family eligibility differs sharply and should be checked before the student pays a deposit. The principal student’s admission does not settle a partner’s entry or work permission.
Australia’s rules changed on 2 October 2026. Most new Student visa applicants cannot include family, with defined exemptions and transitional provisions. Home Affairs also says family members cannot apply later as subsequent entrants under the new arrangements.
Read the official October application update and its detailed subclass 500 guidance. An Indian applicant should not assume that an exemption for specified nationalities applies to them. Earlier applications and existing family holders require their own transition check.
The UK’s dependant guidance generally limits new-course eligibility to qualifying government-sponsored students or specified postgraduate research study. A taught master’s offer should not be sold as a general route for bringing a partner.
Canada distinguishes family entry from a spouse’s open work permit. IRCC’s spouse-work guidance covers master’s programmes of at least 16 months, doctoral study and specified professional or eligible programmes, subject to the requirements.
If the household relies on two incomes, treat the partner’s work eligibility as a condition that must be established in writing. A shorter course can reduce tuition and living time while failing the particular spouse-work criterion the family needs.

How long can Indian graduates stay afterwards?
The potential graduate period depends on the destination, qualification and application circumstances. It is a temporary work or stay route, rather than a permanent residence award.
For Indian nationals, Australia’s ECTA post-study arrangements preserve two years for a bachelor’s degree, three for eligible first-class STEM honours and master’s degrees, and four for a doctorate. Check Home Affairs’ current graduate requirements as well as the period.
The UK Graduate visa lasts two years for applications by 31 December 2026, falling to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates retain three years. The application date, not simply the year study begins, determines the ordinary period.
Canada’s PGWP guidance provides up to three years for eligible master’s graduates whose programmes meet its minimum duration and other requirements. Other programme lengths and types are assessed differently, and passport expiry can limit the issued period.
| Graduate route | Headline period | What must be checked separately |
|---|---|---|
| Australia, qualifying Indian graduates | Two, three or four years according to qualification | Current applicant and course requirements |
| UK, ordinary Graduate route | Two years by 31 December 2026; 18 months from 1 January 2027 | Completion notification, eligible study and application before Student permission expires |
| UK, doctorate | Three years | Graduate route eligibility |
| Canada, eligible master’s route | Up to three years | Institution, programme, language, passport and other applicable requirements |
IRCC’s PGWP document guidance addresses language evidence and field-of-study requirements where applicable. A designated learning institution’s status alone does not establish every programme’s PGWP eligibility.
Which offer makes most sense for your circumstances?
The strongest offer is the one that meets the student’s academic, financial and household requirements under the actual rules. No verified evidence here supports declaring one country best for every Indian applicant.
If the student is choosing a professional course, check registration requirements before comparing graduate visa duration. More time after study cannot correct a qualification that does not meet the intended profession’s rules.
If the family must travel together, establish dependant eligibility before comparing rent. If funds are tight, compare the full course and living commitment, including a realistic period without work. If employment is the objective, assess the course’s actual placements and outcomes using evidence from the provider rather than a country-level promise.
A permanent residence claim requires a separate, current immigration analysis. Ask which route, criteria and application stage the claim refers to. “Study leads to PR” is not an adequate answer for a decision involving several years of fees.
For the broader context, read the Australian student family changes and UK scrutiny affecting Indian applicants. The Student Hub provides related coverage.
What should you verify before the next payment or application?
Verify the course, refund terms, available funds, family route and expected completion date before committing to the next payment. Ask the institution’s international office to resolve any contradiction between its offer and current government guidance.
Use Home Affairs for Australia, UK Visas and Immigration for the UK, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for Canada. The comparison was checked on 8 October 2026; recheck the application-date rules and your own conditions before lodging.
The next step is a written comparison of the actual offers with unresolved conditions clearly marked. A deposit should follow that check, because a favourable headline about one country cannot resolve a missing requirement in an individual application.
