Australia celebrates India’s Independence Day as PMs exchange greetings

Australian capital Canberra’s iconic Telstra Tower was lit in Indian Tricolours on 15 August to mark the 75th anniversary of Indian independence.

Many iconic buildings, including Canberra’s Telstra Tower, Council House and The Bell Tower in Perth, Brisbane City Council, were lit in Orange, White and Green on 15 August to mark India’s Independence Day as Australian Politicians wished Indian diaspora.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison posted a video with Hindi subtitles on his social media channels which he joyfully started with “Namaste and Happy Independence Day”.

“Wishing my dear friend Narendra Modi, the people of India and our Australian Indian community a joyous Independence Day. We cherish our close partnership with India, built on trust, respect and shared values. Happy Independence Day,” Mr Morrison tweeted along with the video.

Indian High Commission organised a virtual screening of the Flag hoisting ceremony where High Commissioner Manpreet Vohra presided over the celebrations.

Australia’s High Commission also organised a special event Flag Hoisting ceremony to celebrate India’s Independence Day and while High Commissioner to India Barry O’Farrell greeted the people of India.
