The discount will be valid for passengers coming to India on connecting international flights as well as for those flying out.

In a move to attract more traffic, AirAsia India has announced a 50% discount on excess baggage fees for passengers taking connecting international flights till June 30. The discounted excess baggage fees can be booked up to two hours prior to a domestic flight’s departure, the statement added.

According to a Press Trust of India (PTI) report, the Bengaluru-based company declared in a statement that passengers connecting to international flights from AirAsia India’s domestic flights can now pre-book their excess baggage at the significantly discounted price of Rs 100 per kg.

As a rule, AirAsia India usually charges Rs 500 per kg for excess baggage for passengers travelling on its domestic flights. This would amount to Rs 4,000 for 8kg excess baggage for a passenger. The discount announced thus reduces this amount significantly.

“The excess baggage slabs have been configured in line with the predominant international baggage allowances of major international carriers, i.e., 8kg at Rs 1,600; 15kg at Rs 3,000; and 30kg at Rs 6,000,” the company stated.

AirAsia India does not operate international services and allows domestic passengers to carry 15 kg check-in baggage for free. Economy-class passengers taking international flights are generally allowed free check-in baggage of 20-25 kg.

“Guests will be asked to show their boarding pass of their international flight within 24 hours of their domestic AirAsia India flight at the check-in counter,” the statement mentioned.

The AirAsia group, a Malaysian multinational low-cost airline headquartered near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, had recently said, first quarter traffic at its airlines across Southeast Asia nearly quadrupled, reflecting travel recovery is well underway as governments around the region ease Covid-19 restrictions. According to their numbers, they carried 3.75 million passengers in the first three months of this year compared to 976,968 a year ago.

Interestingly, Air India, owned by Tata Sons Private Ltd, has informed the Competition Commission of India (CCI) about its plan to merge AirAsia India into it. It currently holds majority stake in the Bengaluru-based AirAsia India with a shareholding of 83.67%. There have also been speculations in the media about similar plans of acquiring Vistara from Singapore Airlines by the end of 2023.
