As the first commercial Qantas flight from Australia to India took off this morning from Sydney. Melbourne is next in line.

A much-awaited Qantas flight from Sydney to Delhi took off on Monday morning, the airline’s first-ever flight to the Indian capital in almost four decades.

In October, Qantas had announced it would resume the flights between Sydney and New Delhi.

The airline will operate three flights a week on the Sydney-Delhi route.

Qantas has also announced Melbourne-Delhi flights four days a week. It will use an Airbus A330 on both the routes and fly, for technical reasons, via Adelaide outbound. The return flights will fly directly to Sydney and Melbourne.

The first flight from Melbourne to Delhi will take off on 22 December 2021.

Qantas says same-day connections will be available from Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the relaunch of international flights from Victoria would pave the way for long-awaited reunions with loved ones and help the state retain its position as one of Australia’s premier destinations for global travellers.

“Victorians have done it tougher than most over the past two years, and we think many will see the restart of Qantas international flights as another important step towards life getting back to normal,” Mr Joyce said.
