The Department of Home Affairs has allocated a total of 33,650 places for nominations, with only 500 places to Victoria for a much sought-after Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa.

New South Wales has received the highest allocation (9,840) of places for nomination in different visa categories. The largest Australian state has 4,000 places for Skilled Nominated (SC 190) Visa to its credit. In addition, 3,640 places have been allocated for Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa and 2,200 for Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP).

Victoria has received only 500 places for Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa, higher only than Western Australia (340) and equal to Northern Territory (500). However, it has 3,500 places to its credit for Skilled Nominated (SC 190) Visa and 1,750 for BIIP.

Melbourne-based Migration expert Rohit Mohan says the number of places allocated to Victoria State for subclass 190 and 491 the financial year 2021-22 is somewhat surprising.

“The Australian Government has been pushing for regional migration, and it was expected that number of places for 491 visa would increase. However, the department has allocated only 500 places for subclass 491 Visa as against 3,500 places for subclass 190 Visa. There is a 55.6% drop in subclass 491 allocations and a 40% increase in subclass 190 allocations compared to the last financial year,” said Mr Mohan of Lakshya Migration, Melbourne.

“The increase in places for subclass 190 is positive for the prospective applicants as subclass 190 is a permanent visa. However, subclass 491 is a temporary visa with five years validity, leading to permanent residency after meeting specified criteria.”

Tasmania’s allocation for Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) is double (2,200) than the places it has received for Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190 visa).

A total of 14,400 places have been allocated for Skilled Nominated (SC 190) Visa while 12,430 places for Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) Visa.
