The City of Parramatta has approved the ‘Little India Precinct’ in Sydney’s western suburb of Parramatta after months of deliberations, Parramatta councillor Sameer Pandey confirmed to NRI Affairs.

“Finally “Little India Precinct” is approved today during City of Parramatta council’s meeting,” the organisation’ Little India Australia’ posted on its Facebook page with the blueprint of the proposed precinct.

“It will be a historic day 15/06/2021 for Harris Park Businesses, Little India Australia,” said the organisation.

‘Taking into account the consultation and community feedback, it is recommended that the use of ‘Little India’ should be limited to a defined trading area of Marion Street, Wigram Street and Station Street East where the related businesses operate’ the council has said.

“Harris Park is identified as one of 5 key visitor precincts in Council’s Destination Management Plan (DMP). The aim of the DMP is to build and communicate successful and sustainable destinations for visitors by providing attractive and unique experiences, whilst balancing the needs of the local community,” the council had said earlier this year on its web page where the public opinion was sought on the project.

“Sometimes referred to as ‘Little India’, Wigram, Marion and Station Streets in Harris Park are home to more than 20 eateries, a variety of shops selling colourful saris, glittering arm bangles and Indian spices that will transport you straight to Mumbai.”
