Over 35,000 people on change.org have signed a petition asking to ‘stand by PM Narendra Modi’.

The petition started by one Vidya Surendran says, “As there is, unfortunately, a negative campaign going on against our dear PM demanding his resignation, the least we citizens who mean well for India can do is to become a part of a positive online campaign pledging our solidarity with our PM right when he needs us to believe in him the most!”

The petition is started in response to a campaign demanding Narendra Modi’s resignation for “responsibility for the mess that has been created under his supervision” during the deadly second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The petition by “a concerned Indian youth” Mrunal Mathuria says, “This is the time when any person in the position of power should take responsibility for the mess that has been created under his supervision and resign, but our power-hungry Prime Minister won’t resign by himself, and it is of utmost importance that we citizens come together and demand his resignation at the earliest and at any cost.”

India has lost close to 240K lives to the COVID-19 pandemic. The second wave has wreaked havoc in the country, with more than 50,000 people dead in just over a month.

Many have died because of the shortage of oxygen and hospital beds.

The critics blame Modi government’s under-preparedness  for the rise in the number of cases and deaths.

“BJP Government had one year to be better prepared for the situation and yet when the crises was at the door, Prime Minister was busy campaigning in Bengal while totally ignoring the situation,” reads the petition titled ‘India Demands Resignation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.’

On the other hand,  supporters of PM Modi believe that the crisis is unprecedented and could not have been anticipated.

“Let’s stop criticising his vaccination policy / his oxygen distribution policy so on and so forth. It’s a state of health emergency and let’s stand by him and not make it difficult to deal with and tackle this unprecedented crisis. I would rather pray and have been praying every day for the safety of our countrymen and do whatever it takes to come out from this period of crisis,” reads the petition in support of the PM titled ‘WE stand by our PM NARENDRA MODI.’

The petition demanding Modi’s resignation has been signed by almost 800,000 people, while the petition in support of the PM has over 35,000 signatures.
