Dr Rakesh Patel was killed in a hit-and-run incident after a carjacker allegedly stole his Mercedes and ran him over, police officials said.
Dr. Rakesh “Rick” Patel, a 33-year old intensive care unit doctor from Silver Spring, Maryland, US was hit and killed by his own Mercedes while chasing down the carjackers who stole the car.
Patel had his car stolen on Vernon Street in the Adams Morgan neighbourhood of Washington DC on Tuesday night after he had left his car running when he got out to give a package to his girlfriend Rachel Lincoln.
Sensing an opportunity as the couple embraced, at the carjackers jumped inside the doctor’s car and sped off. Patel ran after them but was run over by the thieves when he managed to get in front of the car at a busy intersection, as his girlfriend watched in horror.
He was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
The police managed to recover the abandoned car on Thursday but no arrests have been made.
DC’s Metropolitan Police is requesting the help of the public to track down the carjackers, who were last seen in the silver Mercedes E350 with Ohio tags, and have announced a reward of USD 25,000 for details of the carjackers.
