Air India has cancelled its services to and from Hong Kong as the city-state has imposed new COVID related restrictions.

Air India says flights to Hong Kong and back of 19th and 23rd April stand cancelled.

“Due to restrictions imposed by the Hong Kong authorities and limited demand on the sector, our flights to Hong Kong and back of 19th and 23rd April stand cancelled,” Air India tweeted on Sunday.

New rules issued by the Hong Kong authorities allow passengers from India only if they have a COVID-19 negative certificate from a test done 48 hours before the journey.

Earlier in January, Hong Kong had imposed a two-week ban on incoming flights from eight countries, including India. In a press conference, HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that the ban would affect passengers from Australia, Britain, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and the United States, including transferring passengers.

The ban was lifted on 1 April. The city-state had also reduced the quarantine duration for travellers from 14 days to 7 days.

India has witnessed a surge in its daily Covid cases as a 90 per cent increase was recorded on Monday. Over 2,000 new Covid cases were recorded over the past 24 hours, an 89.8 per cent jump from yesterday’s case count of 1,150 cases.

India resumed scheduled international flight services on 27 March 2022, after being suspended for two years due to COVID-19.
