How does the agreement between Tata Group airlines Air India and AirAsia India on interline considerations on irregular operations (IROPs) work? What is in it for the passengers?

Air India and AirAsia India have recently entered into an arrangement that will allow them to carry each other’s passengers in case of a disruption in operations.

The agreement signed between the two carriers will enable airport teams of both Air India and AirAsia to offer alternative first available flights, on an ‘as available’ basis, so that inconvenience to passengers is minimised, according to an internal Air India circular accessed by The Indian Express.

IROPs are interline agreements with other carriers to prevent inconvenience to passengers in case of disruptions caused by delays, cancellations or diversion of flights. IROPs allow passengers will be transferred to the alternative available flight, on a reciprocal basis, in case of disruptions witnessed by either of the airlines on one of the routes where the other airline is operational.

The arrangement between Air India and AirAsia India is only for India’s domestic routes till 9 February 2024.

Tata Group completed the takeover of Air India in January.
