Balbinder Singh received an emotional farewell from hundreds of families and friends locally and abroad as his body was cremated at the Varoko Crematorium, Ba.

Balbindar Singh, aka Binnu as he was popularly known, died after his Tractor crashed in the flooded waters on Saturday 5 February around 9.00 pm.

A community Facebook page ‘Na Teci Roaroa’ remembered Binnu as a ‘real son of Votua’.

“He was a real son of Votua. A true son in the sense that he helped almost everyone regardless of their race, religion, gender or status. He was a sugarcane farmer by trade. During village functions, he was always willing to assist anyone by carting firewood and other related activities,” posted the page.

“Also, ploughing fields for planting root crops were part of his assistance to the local community with a minimal fee or simply requesting that the tractor be refilled with fuel.”

“Even bus companies that service the Votua – Ba Town route have no hesitation to seek his assistance when the buses have mechanical problems. In fact, on the day of his passing away, as usual, he was rendering his services to the local bus service.”

Many people from nearby villages also attended the funeral of 48-year-old Singh.

“The Turaga ni Yavusa Narai, Vatemo Tinalevu was also present today, showing how connected Binnu is to the village of Votua. His close friend and national rugby 7s representative Nacuqu was present today to say goodbye for the last time,” the Facebook post said.

48-year-old Singh is survived by his wife and children.
