Four-year old among dead in mishap at Dera Bassi as out-of-control car hits taxi.

A four-month-old baby was among four persons killed as two cars collided near Dera Bassi on the Chandigarh-Ambala road in the early hours of Thursday.

The accident took place around 1.30 am at Janetpur village when an out of control Maruti Swift car bearing a Haryana number plate rode over the median strip and collided with the Maruti Ertiga cab in which five overseas Indians were travelling to Mohali. The NRI family was returning from Faridabad after attending a family event.

The NRI killed in the mishap have been identified as Harjeet Kaur Dhami (56), her daughter-in-law Sharanjeet Kaur (33) and her four-month-old grandson Ajaib Singh. Gaurav Kumar, from Panipat (Haryana), who was in another car, also died in the accident.

According to Dera Bassi police SHO Kulbir Singh, five members of the NRI family had come to India from Canada to attend a family event. He said the Swift car driver had been booked on a statement of Davinder Singh Dhami, one of the surviving NRIs travelling in the Ertiga.

SHO Singh said that, on 14 December, they had taken a cab from Mohali to attend a wedding at Faridabad and met with the accident on the way back. The witness said the driver of the Swift, who was coming from the Chandigarh side, lost control over his vehicle. After hitting the median, the car jumped over to the other side of the road and collided with their taxi before turning turtle.

According to the police, Hritik Bhalla from Haryana, who was driving the Swift car at a high speed fled from the scene. Gaurav, his co-passenger, also died in the accident.

The bodies were handed over to the victims’ relatives after the postmortem was performed.
