In a recent report, the Committee on External Affairs has emphasised the need for a comprehensive security assessment of all Indian missions and posts abroad. The panel highlighted concerns over the safety of diplomatic personnel and assets, recommending that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) conduct thorough evaluations to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.

The report underscores the importance of updating security protocols in response to evolving global threats. It suggests that the MEA collaborate with local authorities in host countries to bolster security measures and ensure the well-being of Indian diplomats and staff.

Additionally, the committee has called for an increase in budget allocations dedicated to security enhancements. This includes investing in advanced surveillance systems, fortified infrastructure, and regular security drills to prepare for potential emergencies.

The panel also recommended the establishment of a specialised task force within the MEA to oversee the implementation of these security measures. This task force would be responsible for conducting periodic reviews and ensuring compliance with international safety standards.

These recommendations come in the wake of heightened security concerns at diplomatic missions worldwide. The committee’s proactive approach aims to safeguard India’s diplomatic interests and personnel across the globe.

The Ministry of External Affairs is expected to respond to these recommendations and outline a plan for their implementation in the coming months.

In addition to recommending a comprehensive security assessment of all Indian missions and posts abroad, the Committee on External Affairs has proposed several other measures to enhance the effectiveness of India’s diplomatic engagements:

  • Strengthening Economic Diplomacy: The panel advocates for bolstering economic ties with key global partners, emphasising the importance of trade agreements and investment opportunities to promote India’s economic interests.
  • Enhancing Cultural Outreach: Recognising the significance of cultural diplomacy, the committee suggests expanding cultural programmes and exchanges to foster goodwill and mutual understanding between India and other nations.
  • Improving Consular Services: The report highlights the need for upgrading consular services to better serve Indian citizens abroad, recommending the adoption of advanced technologies and streamlined processes for efficiency.
  • Capacity Building for Diplomats: The committee underscores the importance of continuous professional development for diplomatic personnel, proposing specialised training programmes to equip them with the necessary skills to navigate complex international landscapes.

These recommendations aim to strengthen India’s diplomatic framework and enhance its global standing.
