Indian community in Australia joins hands to raise funds for the funeral of a 60-year-old Punjabi man who died in Victoria.

60-year-old Maghar Singh died in Shepparton (Victoria) due to kidney failure. According to a fund-raising appeal posted on Facebook by community leader Manjit Boparai, he had overstayed his visa and has no family in Australia. The mortal remains cannot be repatriated to India due to Covid-19 related travel restrictions.

Therefore, the community has come together to raise funds to arrange Mr Singh’s funeral.

According to the appeal, Maghar Singh hailed from Bhattal village in district Khanna of Punjab.

“The condition of the family is also thin. Sometimes, in times of difficult circumstances force us to stand up, let us stand with the grieving family in this time of sorrow,” (sic) reads the appeal.

Over $8,200 have been raised for Maghar Singh’s funeral and other expenses related to another funeral.
