Delhi-born Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja has received an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category at the 2024 Oscars for her powerful film, ‘To Kill a Tiger.’ This documentary delves into the heart-wrenching narrative of an Indian farmer’s determined legal battle for justice after his daughter becomes a victim of a brutal sexual assault.

Pahuja’s emotional reaction to the live nomination announcement mirrored the sentiments of a global audience. Overwhelmed with shock and joy, she expressed her disbelief and elation, highlighting the film’s potential to bring about impactful change in addressing the challenging subject matter.

At the core of the documentary is Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, India, who embarks on a monumental journey for justice for his 13-year-old daughter, Kiran, following a devastating sexual assault by three men in 2017. Pahuja’s storytelling captures the father’s unwavering love and determination, shedding light on broader issues of gender justice and sexual violence.

Beyond being a career milestone, Nisha Pahuja sees the Oscar nomination as an opportunity to leverage a global platform for greater gender justice. She emphasizes the importance of addressing challenging subjects through her work and believes ‘To Kill a Tiger’ has a significant role to play in fostering awareness and instigating change.
