In a tragic turn of events, Pravin Raojibhai Patel, a 76-year-old Indian-American motel owner, met an untimely demise in the state of Alabama, USA, amidst a confrontation over room rent. The incident, which transpired at the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield, Alabama, left Patel fatally wounded and shocked the local community and beyond.

The unsettling altercation occurred on February 8, when 34-year-old William Jeremy Moore engaged in a dispute with Patel regarding room accommodations at the Hillcrest Motel. Regrettably, the altercation escalated, culminating in Moore resorting to violence, brandishing a handgun, and fatally shooting the elderly motel owner.

Following the tragic event, law enforcement swiftly apprehended Moore, who was attempting to seek refuge in an abandoned residence on 13th Avenue. Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry confirmed Moore’s arrest and the recovery of the murder weapon from his possession. Moore presently remains in custody at the Sheffield City Jail awaiting further legal proceedings.

The devastating loss of Pravin Raojibhai Patel reverberated throughout the community, leaving residents and local businesses in mourning. Jemeriz Owens, a witness to the harrowing incident, recounted hearing the gunfire that claimed Patel’s life, underscoring the senselessness of the act.

The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) expressed profound grief and condemnation for the senseless violence that claimed Patel’s life. AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel denounced the tragedy as a “senseless act of violence,” extending heartfelt condolences to Patel’s grieving family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Sanjay M Patel, AAHOA Alabama Regional Director, echoed sentiments of shock and disbelief, emphasizing Pravin Patel’s enduring legacy as a respected and beloved member of the Sheffield community. Patel’s four-decade tenure as a dedicated motel owner underscored his commitment to service and community involvement, leaving an indelible mark on those he encountered.

As authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Patel’s untimely demise, the community remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice. The outpouring of support and solidarity serves as a beacon of hope for the Patel family and underscores the resilience of the community in the face of tragedy.
