Over 70,000 Punjabis moved to Gulf countries for jobs in last 5 years

According to the Indian government, 70,501 people travelled to the Gulf countries for employment from Punjab in the last five years.

The Ministry of External Affairs informed the Lok Sabha on Friday that 70,501 people had travelled to Gulf nations from Punjab in the last five years, with 417 complaints filed against fake agencies during that time.

“As per records available in the eMigrate platform, 70,501 Indian workers from Punjab were issued emigration clearances during the last five years. These persons were workers proceeding to the Gulf and ECR (Emigration Check Required) countries on job contracts valid for 2-3 years,” said V Muraleedharan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs.

He said, “The Government of India attaches the highest priority to the safety, security and well-being of Indians in foreign countries. As per eMigrate, a total number of 417 complaints of different nature, including about fake agencies, have been registered by the people of Punjab during the last five years.”

“The cases of fake agencies brought to the attention of Ministry/Missions and Posts abroad are shared with the state authorities concerned for appropriate action.”

Muraleedharan highlighted that the Ministry and the Missions/Posts overseas had taken prompt actions to address the reported issues. He said that there was an estimated 1.35 crore Indians living in various countries worldwide, with 8.8 million of them in Gulf countries.
