On Thursday, Punjab police arrested NRI Barjinder Singh Hussainpur for forgery and cheating after allegedly using fake documents to file nomination papers as a BSP candidate from the Nawanshahr constituency.

Barjinder Singh Hussainpur, a US-returned philanthropist, had filed his nomination as Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate from Nawanshahar in Punjab on Tuesday even though the party had announced another candidate, Nachhatar Pal’s name. The party then approached the returning officer (RO) to challenge Hussainpur’s nomination.

On Wednesday, BSP president Mayawati appeared before the Nawanshahr returning officer through video conferencing and confirmed Nachhatar Pal as her party’s candidate and not Hussainpur.

Following this confirmation, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar police arrested Hussainpur on Thursday on cheating and forgery charges.

An FIR was registered under sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and 125A Representation of People Act 1950, 1951 and 1989 at Nawanshahr city police station.

Barjinder Singh is a US-based Indian who runs Narao Punjab Mission NGO. Hailing from Hussainpura in Punjab, Mr Singh had immigrated to the US around 25 years ago.
