The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has delivered a powerful message about the future of artificial intelligence, with telecommunications pioneer Dr Sam Pitroda calling for a fundamental shift in how society approaches AI development—from “profit and power to planet and people.”
Speaking as chief guest at GOPIO’s webinar “What AI Can Do For You?” on 9 August, Dr Pitroda challenged the global Indian diaspora to lead by example in ensuring technology serves humanity’s broader interests.
Bridging the AI Knowledge Gap
The virtual event, moderated by tech entrepreneur Kathirvel Kumararaja, brought together leading experts to address both the opportunities and anxieties surrounding AI adoption in daily life. With participants spanning researchers, innovators, and community thought leaders, the session aimed to demystify AI for citizens of all ages.
Dr Thomas Abraham, GOPIO’s founder chairman, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to creating “a global platform that not only informs but equips the Indian diaspora to use AI in daily lives.”
Expert Insights on AI Implementation
The webinar featured diverse perspectives from industry leaders across academia and business. Dr Siddhartha Dalal, a Columbia University professor with over 100 publications and patents, shared insights on the latest AI trends and real-world applications across industries.
Ms Vatsala Upadhyay, founder and CEO of AI Junoon, offered a uniquely Indian perspective on AI adoption: “AI is like a pressure cooker in an Indian kitchen. It hisses, it’s mysterious, and you are afraid it might explode. But once you know how to use it, it’s your best friend in the kitchen of ideas.”

Practical AI Adoption Strategies
Industrial leader Rahul Shukla, president and CEO of S. S. White Technologies, addressed common concerns about AI reliability with a cultural analogy: “Just because 5% of the time ChatGPT may give you inaccurate answers is no reason to walk away from it,” comparing it to the Ganges River—despite occasional impurities, people don’t abandon its benefits entirely.
Technology innovator Prashant Gupta, whose career spans contributions to the Motorola Razr and Microsoft Azure, urged immediate action from young people: “The youth must act now—even without coding skills.” He outlined a three-step approach focusing on data quality, accessible AI platforms, and solution design.
Future-Focused Initiatives
The webinar concluded with several key takeaways and upcoming initiatives:
- GOPIO will host monthly webinar series covering technology, youth leadership, and healthcare investment
- The next session, “Ancient Wisdom – Modern Maladies,” exploring India’s alternative health approaches, is scheduled for 13 September 2025
- Plans are underway for an international symposium on AI, quantum computing, and tech innovations in early 2026
- New GOPIO chapters are being established in Boston, Nashville, South Jersey, and Pune
Building Global Networks
GOPIO General Secretary Sid Jain reinforced Dr Pitroda’s central message during closing remarks, adding the principle that “with great power comes great responsibility.” The organisation continues its mission of connecting diaspora communities while fostering collaboration and education.
Founded in 1989, GOPIO operates as a non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation with individual life members and chapter delegates from over 100 chapters across 36 countries, working to enhance cooperation between overseas Indians and their local communities.
