Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old New York State Assembly member and democratic socialist, has emerged as a prominent contender in the 2025 New York City mayoral race. Born in Kampala, Uganda, to renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran moved to New York City at the age of seven. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and later from Bowdoin College with a degree in Africana Studies.

Mamdani’s political journey began with grassroots activism, including foreclosure prevention counseling and involvement in various progressive campaigns. In 2020, he was elected to represent Queens’ 36th Assembly District, defeating a four-term incumbent. His mayoral campaign has garnered support from prominent figures like U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who praised his grassroots coalition-building and influence among working-class New Yorkers.

However, Mamdani’s recent comments during a public forum have sparked significant controversy. On May 15, he referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “war criminal,” citing Modi’s alleged involvement in the 2002 Gujarat riots. Mamdani stated, “This is someone who we should view in the same manner that we do Benjamin Netanyahu. This is a war criminal.”

The remarks have drawn criticism from various quarters. Indian-American leaders, including New York Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar and Sikh community leader Jaspreet Singh, condemned Mamdani’s statements as divisive and inflammatory. In India, media outlets and political commentators have accused him of promoting anti-Hindu sentiments and deepening religious divides.

Despite the backlash, Mamdani’s campaign continues to resonate with progressive voters, particularly among South Asian communities in New York City. His emphasis on policies like rent relief and free bus services, combined with his South Asian heritage, has helped him connect with a diverse electorate.

As the June 24 Democratic primary approaches, Mamdani faces the challenge of expanding his appeal beyond his progressive base to a broader spectrum of voters. His candidacy represents a significant moment in New York City’s political landscape, reflecting the complexities of identity, international politics, and local governance.
