In a disconcerting turn of events, an Indian-origin man has been accused of issuing threats to members of the Sikh community residing in the United States. The alleged incidents have sparked concerns and raised questions about the safety and security of Sikhs in the country.

Bhushan Athale, a 48-year-old resident of Dallas, Texas, with Indian origins, has been formally charged with a federal hate crime in a United States court. The charges stem from allegations of making threats against employees of a Sikh non-profit organization.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has announced that Athale faces charges of threatening to use a dangerous weapon and transmitting an interstate threat to injure another person. The DoJ clarified that a federal district court judge will be responsible for determining any potential sentence in this case.

As per the details outlined in the criminal complaint, on September 17, 2022, Athale allegedly made a threatening phone call to an organization dedicated to advocating for the civil rights of Sikhs in the United States, putting its employees at risk.

It’s reported that he purportedly left seven voicemails filled with expressions of “extreme hatred” directed towards Sikh individuals employed at the organization. In these voicemails, he allegedly threatened to cause harm, including injuring or killing these individuals with a razor.

It’s claimed that Athale’s voicemails contained “violent imagery, obscenity, and references to places, people, and beliefs significant within the Sikh religion.” Additionally, in March, Athale purportedly made two more calls to the organization, targeting both Sikhs and Muslims in the voicemails.

According to the Department of Justice, their investigation revealed that Athale has a “lengthy history of making threats and comments based on religious beliefs.” Additionally, they found that he had previously utilized a professional networking platform to communicate with a former colleague, expressing strong sentiments of disdain towards Pakistan and Muslims.

The United States Department of Justice stated that the investigation revealed “Athale’s extensive track record of making religiously motivated remarks and threats. Authorities further alleged that he communicated to a former colleague via a professional networking site, expressing his strong aversion towards Pakistan and Muslims.”

One of his former colleagues that he “hate(d) Pakistan” and “hate(d) Muslims”, and he told the co-worker, “I hate you, I just don’t know how to kill your whole family including you? Tell me??? I will figure it out.. Probably I will hire a Jew, they will be most happy”.

If convicted, Athale could potentially face a maximum sentence of ten years in prison for interfering with federally protected activities and up to five years in prison for transmitting an interstate threat.”

Sikh advocacy groups have voiced their concerns over the rise in hate crimes and discrimination against their community, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and proactive measures to combat such incidents. The Sikh Coalition, a prominent advocacy organization, has urged law enforcement agencies to take the matter seriously and ensure the safety of Sikh Americans.

The accusations against the Indian-origin man come at a time when hate crimes against minority communities, including Sikhs, have been on the rise in the United States. Incidents of violence, harassment, and discrimination have instilled fear among many, prompting calls for greater protection and support for vulnerable groups.
