A murder convict, Narender Singh, who had been evading justice with an Interpol Red Notice against him, was extradited from the UAE on Friday in a joint operation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) using Interpol channels, officials confirmed.
Singh was implicated in a case of murder dating back to December 26, 1994, at Tohana police station, as per Haryana Police records. Allegedly, he had brutally attacked and killed Swaran Singh using a machete. Despite being acquitted by the trial court in 1998, the Punjab and Haryana High Court later sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2009.
Following suspicions that Singh had absconded, Haryana Police reached out to the CBI to issue an Interpol Red Notice against him. Subsequently, the CBI obtained a Red Notice from the Interpol General Secretariat on November 7, 2023, which was disseminated to all Interpol member countries to locate and apprehend the accused.
Utilizing Interpol’s extensive network, the CBI successfully traced Singh’s whereabouts in the UAE. Through close coordination with Interpol NCB Abu Dhabi, Haryana Police, the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi, and the Ministry of External Affairs, Singh was repatriated to India on the scheduled day under the supervision of a security detail from the Special Task Force (STF) of Haryana Police.
The CBI, serving as India’s designated National Central Bureau for Interpol, plays a pivotal role in coordinating the country’s law enforcement agencies with Interpol’s global initiatives. In 2023 alone, owing to diligent efforts and effective collaboration via Interpol channels, 29 criminals wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies were repatriated from abroad. Additionally, the CBI facilitated the issuance of 100 Red Notices through Interpol, targeting fugitives and criminals sought by Indian authorities.
The successful repatriation of Narender Singh underscores the commitment of Indian law enforcement agencies and their international counterparts to uphold justice and ensure that perpetrators of heinous crimes are brought to account. Through sustained efforts and cooperation, such operations not only serve as a deterrent to crime but also uphold the rule of law, fostering safer communities and reinforcing the principles of justice and accountability.
