In a significant moment during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in Kampala, Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni expressed admiration for the substantial contributions made by the Indian diaspora to Uganda’s economic landscape. Commending their achievements, President Museveni specifically highlighted that Indian returnees have played a pivotal role in establishing approximately 900 factories, significantly influencing the country’s industrial and economic development.

Reflecting on Uganda’s complex history, particularly the expulsion of Asians, predominantly Indian Ugandans, during the regime of Idi Amin, President Museveni openly acknowledged the regrettable mistakes made by the government at that time. Despite the challenges of the past, he commended the resilience of the Indian diaspora and their enduring contributions to Uganda’s industrial and economic sectors.

President Museveni also delved into the adverse consequences of historical actions, such as Amin’s expulsion of the Asian community. He highlighted the negative economic impact on the country and emphasized the missed opportunities for growth and development during that period. The president stressed the importance of rectifying past injustices and fostering an environment conducive to sustained economic development.

Furthermore, President Museveni acknowledged India’s crucial role in the formation of the NAM group and its active participation in the first NAM summit held in Belgrade in 1961. This recognition underscores the historical ties and collaborative efforts between India and Uganda, emphasizing the significance of diverse communities in Uganda’s ongoing development.

The summit provided a valuable platform for discussions on historical challenges, ongoing rectification efforts, and the positive impact of diaspora communities. President Museveni’s comments reflect a shared commitment to fostering economic growth and inclusivity in Uganda, recognizing the instrumental role played by the Indian diaspora in shaping the nation’s economic trajectory. The commendation serves as a testament to the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the diverse contributions of diaspora communities to the development and prosperity of their adopted countries.
