Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh has made history, becoming the youngest-ever undisputed world chess champion at just 18 years old. Gukesh achieved the milestone by defeating reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the final classical game of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, held in Singapore.

In a dramatic finish to the 14-game match, Gukesh capitalized on a critical error by Ding during the endgame of the final match. With the score tied at 6.5 points apiece, the teenager showcased composure and tactical brilliance to clinch the decider with black pieces, securing a 7.5–6.5 victory. His win surpassed the previous record held by Russian legend Garry Kasparov, who became champion at 22 in 1985.

Reflecting on the historic moment, Gukesh said, “It’s the best day of my life,” as tears of joy rolled down his face after the victory. His triumph also makes him the second Indian to claim the world championship title, following in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand, who won the crown five times.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Gukesh bouncing back after losing the opening game to secure key victories in Games 3 and 11. Ding managed to force a tie with a strong comeback in Game 12, but Gukesh’s precise endgame strategy in the final clash sealed his legacy.

Gukesh’s remarkable rise this year also includes winning the Candidates Tournament, making him the youngest-ever challenger for the world title. His victory marks a new era for Indian chess and cements his place as one of the sport’s brightest stars.

This landmark achievement has brought immense pride to India, with Viswanathan Anand and the global chess community hailing Gukesh’s triumph as a testament to his talent and perseverance.
