Sydney’s famous ‘Bollywood Car’ needs the community’s help to stay alive. Jamie Robinson has appealed to the Indian community to help him convert the car into an electric one.

‘Bollywood Car’ is Australia’s only Indian-style taxi run by a passionate Indophile, Jamie Robinson.

Jamie says the Bollywood Car is a real passion project of his, marrying his “on/off interest in cars (depending on their reliability) and the long term fascination with all things Indian.”

“My interest in India stemmed from growing up in Swansea, Wales, in the UK, where Indian food was revered almost as much as rugby/laverbread and further blossomed from being exposed to Indian culture throughout my life in the UK, Dubai and Australia. Blackbird, which was written in Rishikesh, has been one of my lifelong favourite songs,” says Jamie, who created Bollywood Car in India from scratch.

Bollywood Car was established in 2019 “to provide unique and unforgettable Indian-style hire-car and photo-booth experiences using the iconic Indian Taxi.”

“This is the only car of its kind in Australia and creates a positive reaction from all ages and demographics wherever it goes. The car has featured at weddings, joyrides, in films, promotions and more,” said Jamie.

“Enduring the 3+ year process of going from the thought of having an Indian-style taxi in Sydney to making it a reality has been well worth all the highs and lows, the cost and numerous hours spent waiting for tow trucks,” he added.

“I feel that this has become more than just a car and has become a bit of a vehicle of hope. In addition to visually promoting different cultures, it has been a great conversation starter / thought-provoker. I hope it has encouraged people to open their minds and hearts to important issues such as maintaining heritage, respecting the planet and causes such as Save the Rhino and Save The Vulture (which are promoted on the front of the car). I also hope it has encouraged people to give their own passion projects a try and focus on the fun in life.”

He says the car has also spent far too long on tow trucks after breakdowns in precarious situations and is letting people down and causing its owner to go grey.

“After another recent breakdown and with the engine nearing the end of its life, the time has come to upgrade to preserve,” said Jamie adding, “The solution is to convert the 1954 Bollywood Car from the unreliable, polluting, expensive-to-run, 1.5l petrol engine to a modern, reliable, environmentally-friendly and more cost-effective, electric motor.”

Jaime Robinson has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $25,750, the quote received by EV North to convert the car.

“Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for you, after the COVID-ravaged last few years and with significant investment already gone into the car, we do not have these funds currently at our disposal. So, in exchange for people kindly ‘paying it forward, we are offering large discounts off your future use of the car and other benefits,” said Jaimie.

The car is booked in with EV North for work to commence in July. Jaime Robinson can be contacted here.
