The community is raising funds to help 10-year-old Angela Sharma, the daughter of Poonam Sharma who was stabbed to death along with her 6-year-old daughter in Melbourne on Friday.
“This beautiful lady in the photo along with her 6 year old daughter fell victim and lost their lives from the hands of her husband and now her only remaining child 10 year old Angela is left grieving and traumatised. However, this is not the last of her pain, as she will have to go through custody battles. I am raising money towards legal fees and Angela’s welfare,” reads the fundraising appeal started by a community member Joanna Minhas.
39-year-old Poonam Sharma, an Indian-origin nurse, and her 6-year-old daughter have died in Melbourne due to stab wounds, while a 10-year-old child managed to escape.
Sources close to the family told NRI Affairs that both the parents’ families are organising visa from India to reach out to Angela as she does not have any other family in Australia.
Police found 40-year-old Prabhal (Raj) Sharma on the scene. He was married to Poonam Sharma, a dental nurse.
When the officers attending the scene confronted Mr Sharma, he turned the knife on himself, police said.
“They engaged with that male, and as a result, that male proceeded to injure himself, and police had to take affirmative action and take him into custody,” said homicide squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas.
Mr Sharma is now in hospital under police guard and will be interviewed after medical clearance.
Inspector Thomas said that Angela, the 10-year-old, was going through an “absolutely terrible, traumatic incident”. “She’s been through a terrible, terrible incident, so we want to make sure she’s as good as you can be.”
